Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been jailed for two years for making defamatory remarks against the Modi community. The sentence was passed by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Surat. Rahul's controversial remark was made while speaking at an election campaign meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka as part of the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign.
Rahul's remark was that Modi is in the name of all thieves. Purnesh Modi, a BJP leader and MLA from Surat, filed a complaint pointing out that this is defamatory to the members of the Modi community. The court granted bail to Rahul in the case. Rahul got bail by posting Rs 10,000. The court gave Rahul 30 days to file an appeal in the case. Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code were imposed.
